This historic congregational church was built in the early 1860s in Nashua, a small town in central Iowa. The parish was active, but tired of meeting in various locations. Desiring their own church, they worked hard with donated materials to complete the church during the hard times of the civil war. When it came to painting the church, the only affordable paint to protect the wood was brown. Certainly not their first choice, but they were grateful. In honor of their history, the church has remained the same color. A young music teacher, William Pitts discovered the area and was inspired to write the hymn that will forever be associated with the church. Today, this small country church is more known for it's wedding services than anything else. Each year, close to 500 couples from around the world are married in this church. The first weekend of August is reserved for a reunion of couples married here, numbering over 75,000.
